King Louis XIII of France was passionately addicted to falconry and maintained a huge establishment of hawks and falcons for the widest imaginable types of flights. At one end of the scale he employed gyrfalcons to take herons and kites, whilst at the other used trained shrikes to fly at sparrows and even butterflies.
